Here is the start of photos for the 2011 growing season in the neighborhood community garden
What the garden means to me: It is a place for me to be part of something bigger than myself. I love working with my neighbors to seed, nurture, harvest, wash and deliver vegetables to our neighborhood food pantry. The food we grow only travels about 5 blocks to get to people to need it. Its incredibly rewarding on a personal level.
Last summer, my oldest asked me why we were growing vegetables and then giving them away. I explained that there were people in our neighborhood who didn't have enough money to buy the food they need, so we were helping them out. She thought about that for a minute and then said, "Someday we might need someone to grow food for us. Growing these vegetables is like a circle of caring". Yup, she gets it.
